The One Thing

In the course of their journey he came to a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord’s feet and listened to him speaking. Now Martha who was distracted with all the serving said, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by myself? Please tell her to help me.’ But the Lord answered: ‘Martha, Martha,’ he said, ‘you worry and fret about so many things, and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part, it is not to be taken from her.’  Luke 10: 38-42

The one thing.

Fred Boice has a self-assigned summer project of breaking down what does it mean to be a disciple-maker, because that is the one thing of a Christian school.  And Christian schools are fraught with distractions and worry and fret about so many things.

So this has been a discussion and meditation for the past day.

Maturity in Christ should have this centeredness about one.  A steady calm.  I have been thinking what is the impact of Scripture on a life.  It gives perspective.  Eternal perspective- an anchor.  In the midst of storms and change and turmoil, a disciple should be able to join the Master at rest in the bottom of the boat.

And the rhythm of spiritual disciplines gives room for the Spirit to work and transform.  Is it really too simplistic to list the Fruits of the Spirit as student outcomes?  If discipleship is effective, then the discipled with live with love. Joy. Peace. Patience. Kindness. Goodness. Meekness. Self-control. Faithfulness.

If not, then everything else needs to be ripped away.
