Then
they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us
make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole
earth.” Genesis 11:4
So in answer to my bemoaning struggles
with Genesis, Cameron sent me a link to Rob Bell’s Old Testament blog. And he
offers lots of good Big Picture perspectives and background and deep reminders
of God at Work and God is Love.
Rob reminds us that this is a story
about what happens when a powerful warrior (Nimrod) who’s building an empire
gets his hands on new technology and begins to use it to set himself up as a
god, crushing everybody and everything in his path.
And it isn’t so much about a God who is
afraid of what man can do unleashed. But we all know that somehow our hearing
and understanding gets stopped up the wealthier, the more self-confident, the
more powerful we become. And we tromp on others less fortunate. Really Job was
remarkable for a rich man. Literally. So
much so that God said that ‘there is no one on earth like him; he is blameless
and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil." Most of the rest of us trip
ourselves up completely with stuff and get totally distracted from God and His
desire to be known.
And we have a God who will stop at
nothing to bring us into relationship with Him. Not for His own glory and
worship, but for our own joy and completion. Because He loves us.
