New mercies

New mercies

Watch
You are not hidden
Lurking in doubtfull shadows
Breathe in, out, and see.

By awesome deeds You answer us with righteousness,
    O God of our salvation,
the hope of all the ends of the earth
    and of the farthest seas;
the one who by His strength established the mountains,
    being girded with might;
who stills the roaring of the seas,
    the roaring of their waves,
    the tumult of the peoples. Psalm 65:5-7

The Church Fathers were not fools. They knew a thing or two about herding their flock of easily distracted sheep. As I wandered ancient streets last summer, again and again my heart and mind were drawn back to His great faithfulness, whether it be yet one more carved outstretched arms of love lifted high or the church bells ringing out throughout the dark alleys and wide valleys.

So last night the ladies decided that we would all set our iPhones to the hours. Liz said that it was a helpful practice. To call our attentiveness back to our Hope.

A little goofy, perhaps. But desperate times call for desperate measures.

…Who stills the tumult of the peoples.

But Your word will not fail.

You speak in my heart and say, “Seek My face.”
Your face, Lord, will I seek.

Gather
Perhaps words will fail
As I gather them to speak
Your power and love.

But Your word will not fail.

The Lord is my light and my salvation—
Whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the refuge and fortress of my life—
Whom shall I dread?

One thing I have asked of the Lord, and that I will seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the Lord in His presence all the days of my life,
To gaze upon the beauty, the delightful loveliness and majestic grandeur of the Lord
And to meditate in His temple. Psalm 27:1, 4

Deep in my heart I know I do believe
We shall overcome
Some day.

I pray LORD that my thoughts and soul and spirit will dwell in Your presence today… may I be still in Your refuge, gazing at Your beauty, Your loveliness, and Your majestic grandeur.

Deep in my heart, I know I do believe.
You have overcome.

Overcome.

Past Perfect tense.

The road is long with many a winding turn.

Camino
What lies beyond the curve?
As He whispers “Follow Me,”
Oh teach me Thy ways.

It shall come to pass in the latter days
    that the mountain of the house of the Lord
shall be established as the highest of the mountains,
    and shall be lifted up above the hills;
and all the nations shall flow to it,
       and many peoples shall come, and say:
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
    to the house of the God of Jacob,
that He may teach us His ways
    and that we may walk in His paths.” Isaiah 2:2-3

All the nations shall flow; many peoples shall come.
That He may teach us His ways
And that we may walk in His paths.

And yesterday I sorta randomly joined a MeetUp hiking club with a bunch of people I didn’t know for a moonlit hike labeled “hard,” scrabbling up the decomposed granite of the Coronado National Forest.  Yes, Saguaro cacti are a forest.

So now I know a few more pretty chill, sturdy people in Tucson.

But the amazing thing for me about this journey is the clicks on my Facebook post with a perspective shot of the path. And all of the many peoples who have joined in my camino, my picking up my figurative walking poles and following Him, not only my beloved family and folks from Prince or the Vineyard or every possible point in of my forty-five years in the ever-sprawling Old Pueblo, but delightful lightbearers from all the nations: Mexico, Italy, Czech Republic, Spain, Brazil, Palestine, Iraq, Iran, and China.

Bing, bing, bing.

Every single one of those names bring a smile to my heart. And each has been an encouragement, a shoulder to lean on, hands to bind up blistered bits and pieces, a warm hand up or an outstretched espresso.

The flow.

And once again I am reminded of C. S. Lewis, of course, and The Last Battle, and the flow of all the nations and all the peoples through the massive portal, when at last these broken and aching times draw to an end, and at last justice rolls down like a river:
The new Narnia was a deeper country: every rock and flower and blade of grass looked as if it meant more. I can’t describe it any better than that: if you ever get there you will know what I mean.

It was the Unicorn who summed up what everyone was feeling. He stamped his right forehoof on the ground and neighed, and then cried:
“I have come home at last! This is my real country! I belong here. This is the land I have been looking for all my life, though I never knew it till now. The reason why we loved the old Narnia is that it sometimes looked a little like this. Bree-hee-hee! Come further up, come further in!”

May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you: wherever He may send you;
May He guide you through the wilderness: protect you through the storm;
May He bring you home rejoicing : at the wonders He has shown you;

May He bring you home rejoicing : once again through these doors.

And yet another train whistle.

November 3, 2017

Awake up, my glory; awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early. Psalm 57:8

Awaken.
A blink of the eye
Axis spinning in His hands
Dark has lost its grip.

Harps and lutes are a little rare around this part of town. The train whistle roars and the clackity clack of the iron wheels against the iron track straight through the middle of downtown. A car rushes over the pocked street. Yet another train whistle.

The flickering candle is silent. The round orb of light over the front gate draped in pink bougainvillea is silent. The moon, the longnight or frost moon dangling low over the Tucson mountains in the west is silent.

The shepherd lumped in rolling knolls on a cold dark night. No harps nor lutes. Perhaps an occasional sheep snuffle or fellow snore. A cascade of pebbles loosened by restless turning.

Unsuspecting and dulled with the wait.

Longnights.

Awaken.

The window opens east and with each glance, the sky is lighter, pressing golden pink through the tree shadows.

Black shifts into green.

Relentless.

The sun is relentless.

Light wins.
Hope presses up through the cold dark.
Every time.

O Lord, let my soul rise up to meet You
As the day rises up to meet the sun.

And yet another train whistle.
But now it is light.
