It Does What It Does

You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored?  It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden under foot by men.  Matthew 5: 13

It seems that Jesus has just finished defining His terms:  saltiness = poor in spirit, repentant, meek, righteous, merciful, pure peacemakers.  By our very essence- one hardly thinks of salt as being hard at work- it just does what it does- stop decay and add flavor by its very nature- we impact the entire earth.  If we take our hearts off of this truth, and get distracted by religion or laws or ritual or definitions, then we become worthless- in our impact- and are good for nothing- except to be trodden underfoot.

I guess that’s it.  Our minds, our hearts, our souls have to be fixed.  Not double-minded.

I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
